Kemp Town Chippy: A Culinary Gem of Brighton
Nestled in the vibrant area of Kemptown, Brighton, Kemp Town Chippy is more than just a fish and chips takeaway; it's a beloved institution that has captured the hearts—and appetites—of locals and visitors alike. With its friendly atmosphere and a menu that promises fresh, quality seafood, this charming chippy stands out as a must-visit culinary destination.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the fresh fish, delivered daily and expertly hand-cut into portions. Whether you opt for the luscious Small Cod (£4.00), the flaky Large Haddock (£5.00), or the traditional Plaice (£4.00), each bite is a testament to skill, quality, and passion for seafood. The batter has been lauded for its crispy golden perfection, creating the ideal crunch that complements the tender fish within. Recent customers have raved about the “lovely friendly guy” behind the counter and the generous portions that ensure you leave satisfied.
If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss the calamari—homemade rings of squid coated in panko breadcrumbs that provide a delightful crunch for just £3.20. And for those who prefer vegetarian options, the McCains vegetable burger (£3.50) is a standout, combining real, fresh vegetables to create a deliciously spiced sandwich served in a warm seeded bun alongside freshly shredded lettuce and sharp cheddar cheese.
The dining atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it perfect for a quick takeaway or an impromptu picnic on the nearby beach. Customers have praised the establishment for its swift service, with one happy diner noting they were “in and out in a few minutes”—the perfect solution for a busy Friday night. Another fun highlight is the iconic double-cooked chips, presented in a classic paper cone that enhances the experience and brings back nostalgic memories of seaside outings.
Feedback from patrons speaks volumes. From one satisfied visitor who exclaimed, “we’ll be back for sure!” to another who appreciated the “ice cold crispy gherkin and just the right amount of mushy peas,” it’s clear that Kemp Town Chippy knows how to deliver satisfaction. Even on off days, where a customer mentioned slight sogginess in one piece of fish, the supportive replies suggest that the team values feedback and is eager to ensure quality standards are maintained.
Overall, Kemp Town Chippy offers not just a meal but an authentic taste of British seaside culture. Whether you are a Brighton local or just visiting, make sure to stop by this local treasure for some of the best fish and chips in town. You won’t just be tasting the food; you’ll be experiencing a staple of British culinary tradition, wrapped up in a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere.

Double cooked chips in a well folded paper cone, ice cold crispy gherkin and just the right amount of mushy peas. If you’re in kemp town and fancy some chips, this is the place (plaice).

Just moved to the area and pleased to have a chippy right behind our flat! Popped in for Friday night chippy tea - large cod & chips between my son and I. Was in and out in a few minutes, both fish & chips were yummy, no cooking for me and minimal washing up so a winner all round.
